bisaya kong dako!

relaxing in between war breaks, i happen to pass by gwapito.com and was very impressed by his efforts to spread bisaya – the language of central and most of southern philippines. you see, more people consider bisaya as their mother tongue though everybody understands tagalog. before i go further let me define some words here.

filipino
-the austronesian language that is based on tagalog, draws its lexicon from other philippine languages, and is the official language of the philippines.(may also refer to the native of the country)
tagalog
-the austronesian language of the tagalog on which filipino is based.
bisaya/binisaya
-a member of the largest ethnic group indigenous to the philippines, found in the visayan islands.
-the austronesian language of the visayans.

based on the above definitions, our official language is predominantly tagalog. i can’t make a statement though, as to why tagalog was declared the wikang pambansa back 1939(or 1937?) by pres. manuel quezon, other than he is also tagalog himself. (no discrimination here) based on the map below(by wikipedia) bisaya and its dialects are widely spoken in the philippines a compared to tagalog. since the declaration is already done centuries ago and all schools are using filipino/tagalog as one of the two media of instruction(the other one is english), us visayan bloggers will be spreading our language through our blogs.

katagalugan

kabisaya-an(kabisay-an)

bisaya/binisaya is actually made up of several dialects with cebuano being widely spoken. other's include boholano, surigaonon, waray-waray, masbatenyo, ilonggo and other dialects.

so, let's start. we will use cebuano here in my blog. here are some common words/phrases from gwapito.com:

some tagalog and bisaya words are actually the same but i can't conclude that bisaya descended from tagalog or vice versa. i'm sure of one thing though, the malay-speaking balangay communities had most of their settlements in central philippines and most of our languages are from those natives.

i am not proposing that bisaya shall be our wikang pambansa(national language). gwapito.com and i are aiming for education, awareness , to lessen discrimination and to celebrate our ethnicity and comments are welcome.

more word translations will follow soon or you can read a blog of pure bisaya here.

Napag-aralan namin ang isyu tungkol sa national language chuchu. Hindi naman talaga Tagalog ang national language, but Filipino (which is supposed to be pinaghalo-halo ng mga wikang Pinoy). It just so happened na Tagalog ang ginawang standard sa lexicon and grammar mainly because this is spoken in the capital (like in China na ang Mandarin, which is spoken mainly in Beijing, ang ginawang national language).

I don't agree how other people call Cebuano and other regional languages as mere "dialects". Kyungengot ang mga ganon mag-isip.

ano ba ang batayan para matawag ang isang bagay na language o dialect?

This post is most interesting. It goes to show your social awareness and all.

Language "preservation" is a noble cause. You can start it here on your blog if you want to.

But the idea has to be supported by your fellow Visayan too. When I was in Mindanao Island, I learned they speak the Bisaya language -- BUT, what they try to teach me are Tagalog words. (and spoke to me in English).

Shouldn't they teach me Bisayan?

***If a dialect is spoken by more than a million people -- it's elevated to a "language".

***from our textbooks in Thailand --"the great languages of the Philippines; Tagalog, Ilocano, Bicolano, Cebuano, Kapampangan, Tausug, Hiligaynon...

See? We know!!!!

hal:

Tara, kumain na tayo - Tagalog

pwede nang gamitin ang:

Tara, magkain na tayo - Filipino batay sa Cebuano.

May mga salitang panrehiyunal na rin ang ginagamit na sa Filipino, tulad ng 'gahum' kasi wala siyang exact na katumbas sa Tagalog so ito na mismo ang ginagamit sa akademya.

ayun.

wow galing galing naman. now i'm obliged to post next week hehehe

@ pisanu-they do have a good reason of teaching you tagalog instead of bisaya-cebuano. i'll discuss it on the next binisaya entry

@anon-thank for the needed info. pakilala ka naman.

ay diay. Nabuang ako din hi. Lol.

I agree talaga. Dapat Bisaya ang national language natin. Despite the fact as Anon said na "isa lang" ang Tagalog and spread out ang Bisaya between Cebuano, Ilonggo and Waray, the thing is, THEY ALL UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER. :)) My mom, for example, can speak the three languages with ease dahil konti lang difference. Dami pa jud mga Bisaya ha mindanao. :D

Dapat imove ang capital to CEBU! woot! hehehe.
